Our Accomplishments |
Since its inception in 1993, Concerned Medical and Health Care Professionals has been providing a wide range of health services and prevention programs to the African American and Latino communities in Maryland. We have been recognized both locally and nationally for our successful HIV/AIDS, STD and substance abuse prevention programs. Some of those credits include:
- The President's Advisory Council on STDs/HIV and AIDS honored the YOUth Reach peers
- Awarded the City of Rockville Proclamation for quality services and significant contributions to the community
- Presented with a Montgomery County Achievement Award in recognition of efforts in STDs/HIV and AIDS prevention at the 1999 World AIDS Day commemoration.
We employ a variety of programs and methods to encourage HIV/AIDS, STD and substance abuse prevention. Since 1999, one of our flagship programs, Project H.O.P.E. has accomplished the following:
- Conducted 1,440 small group educational sessions in community settings
- Reached an estimated 15,000 African American women
- Conducted 100 HIV/AIDS training seminars and workshops at community events
- Referred 969 participants to HIV and STD testing clinics in Montgomery County
- Distributed approximately 15,000 male and 4,200 female condoms per year
- Participated in four community health fairs
- Disseminated 45,384 brochures between July 1995 and June 2001
- Provided outreach to more than 1,800 women between October 1999 and March 2002.
In addition to our prevention programs, some of our other activities and accomplishments include:
- Providing leadership on the Montgomery County African American Health Initiative
- Providing leadership on the Montgomery County Department of Health and Human Services Public Health Services Integration Team
- Conducting presentations at local and national levels addressing health issues, including: health care for public housing residents, culturally appropriate methods for delivering HIV/AIDS medical care to diverse populations, effective outreach to the African American community, and culturally appropriate strategies for HIV/AIDS prevention
- Conducted cultural competency training for nurses in a pediatric hospital setting
- Implemented "Project Life," a youth mentoring network designed to provide risk reduction information on HIV/AIDS among high-risk adolescents in Montgomery County, Maryland
- Implemented a 6-week long "Parents as Mentors" program for parents and their teenagers in Montgomery County, Maryland
- Conducted HIV testing and pre/post counseling in collaboration with the Montgomery County Department of Health and Human Services
- Provided medical screening and evaluation in clinic settings in three states
(CA, MD, VA)
- Reached 250 high school students through the Red-Ribbon AIDS Awareness Program
- Produced two videos: "No Boundaries, No Borders" (1999) and "Healthier Living" (2000) addressing the impact of STDs/HIV/AIDS in the Washington metropolitan area.
